A long awaited road to residency for migrant workers bring welcome relief to New Zealand’s dairy industry

This Policy:

  • Provides work visa holders with certainty of residency and will offer relief to farmers eager to retain their staff

  • Provide a pathway for work visa holders to support their family through their joint residency applications

The one-off residency grant for migrant workers announced at the end of September by Immigration Minister, the Hon Kris Faafoi after many years of lobbying from The Regions Immigration Law & Recruitment, and other key dairy industry stakeholders.

This residency pipeline will lighten the load for New Zealand’s dairy industry and keep skilled workers from crossing the ditch, to Australia and Canada – a well documented problem in recent times – Migrants swap NZ for certainty

The 2021 residency path will provide dairy workers with long-awaited certainty and recognition their skills are desperately needed – and valued – here in Aotearoa.
The fact the announcement has come during Mental Health Awareness Week is also welcome news for dairy farmers, many of whom have been pushed to the brink in New Zealand’s current labour shortage.
